Jenny is having trouble motivating herself; she’s stuck in a rut and knows she needs to move out of it in order to go forward in her life. There’s nothing she can actually pin-point so she’s asked for an e-mail reading.
After deciding on my six-card “stuck in a rut” spread, shuffling and cutting the cards, I laid out the spread as seen in the illustration above.
The card showing the current energies are laid out along the bottom of the spread, the future energies are the top three cards.
The reading begins…
Jenny, the current negative energies are shown as the eight of Wands. Wands are the suit of creativity enthusiasm and passion, linked to the element of fire, while the number eight signifies movement. Here the illustration shows us eight wands travelling swiftly past us while a house can be seen in the distance surrounded by water. This shows us that perhaps you have been expecting things to have been happening quickly for you, and when this has not been the case you have been disappointed and felt let down. The wands flying past us can also hint at losing direction, this type of negativity can highlight chaos, you’ve been moving in so many directions that you haven’t actually thought about which direction you would really like to go in. As the wands are falling to earth you may need to come down to earth a little (also highlighted by the grounding aspects of home) and think practically about what you would like to do with your life.
The current positive energies are seen here as a major arcana card – the Empress. The major cards highlight the important areas of our life and here the positive energies far out weigh the negatives of the last card. The Empress is the mother figure of the Tarot, she is nurturing, sensuous, loving and in tune with her surroundings. This card shows that although you are in a rut there is no real hardship at the moment, have you perhaps grown too comfortable in your surroundings? The Empress loves comfort and as the mother figure is always there for family and friends, she enjoys seeing people happy and will make everyone welcome. It’s interesting in this spread that the other positive card is the minor arcana equivalent of the Empress, so the message is coming in loud and clear here. You enjoy looking after people and enjoy comfort and luxury yourself. This could perhaps be used in your future plans, is there something you enjoy doing that could make use of your nurturing instincts and love of the finer things in life?
The third card is telling us what you need to think about and is shown as another major arcana card, the Magician. We see him here, the tools of his trade in front of him as he raises one arm to the heavens and one to the earth….as above so below! The Magician is the one who is able to use all his abilities and bring his dreams to reality, and he is telling you that you can do the same. Focus and intent is a big part of this card, so you need to focus on what you really want. This card can also come across as a big of a player though…he’s the salesman of the deck! Make sure that you are not talking the talk and using illusion to mask your true intentions.
Ok, now onto the future part of the spread – remember the future is not fixed but this can show the path opening up if nothing changes…
The World shows us the negative energies that you need to be aware of, again a major arcana card this shows that it’s the bigger things in life that you are focussing on. The World shows us a woman, she floats in the cosmos surrounded by creatures of the zodiac, naked and free. This is the card of accomplishment, attainment and integration - the world is hers, she has reached the end of her present journey and has accomplished what she set out to do. A wonderfully positive card, but it is in a negative aspect here… be aware of wanting it all and wanting to do anything and everything. The Magician asks you to focus and you can see here that if you don’t you may feel unsatisfied with your lot for a while longer because you simply can’t make your mind up!
Now then, the positive things to look out for in the future…the Queen of Pentacles. As I noted earlier she’s the minor arcana equivalent of the Empress, I wonder if we had two Empresses in the pack if she would have shown up twice? The Queen of Pentacles is linked to the element of earth and can be taken to mean a situation, a state of mind or a person. She’s practical (she’d make sure you had your jumper on if she thought it was going to be cold), she’s generous (she’d give you a snack to take with you on your journey) and she is loving (she’s be waiting at home for you to return with a warm meal and a roaring fire). So the positive things to look out for? Look towards all those properties in yourself and in your future prospects. Be kind to yourself, be practical in deciding what you want to do next and take your head out of the clouds, instead look closer to home and what makes you feel good. There is a great deal of nurturing here…do you enjoy cooking, gardening, looking after people? All of these things are linked to both the Queen of Pentacles and the Empress.
Finally the guidance from the Tarot comes to us as the Emperor, yet another major arcana card! The Emperor is the consort of the Empress, yet while she is nurturing and loving of refinement, the Emperor is the father figure of the Tarot and knows that discipline and action is sometimes required. He stands for authority and structure, and may also point towards a male in authority that you could approach for help in making your decisions. The guidance here comes from knowing that in order to move forward you cannot sit still, you must move forward with your ideas but you must be strict with yourself. Don’t let yourself get comfortable with the rut you find yourself in, use your self-discipline to push yourself towards a future that will make the most of yourself.
So, in conclusion then, there is a lack of direction in your life at the moment, while you are perhaps comfortable where you are it is easy to stay in the rut you find yourself in. The Magician asks you to make the most of your skills and bring them into reality by focusing. The negative aspects coming through for the future are in the form of wanting to accomplish anything and everything, again the lack of focus can leave you feeling unsatisfied. With both the Empress and the Queen of Pentacles appearing I would look closely at what you enjoy and see how you can use these gifts practically while at the same time being kind to yourself. The Emperor is showing that you may need self-discipline and structure to help you move forward.
